Friday Egg: Artifact

©Katy David "Artifact" Etched Emu eggshell, green and white

"Artifact" is an etched emu egg. All color on this piece is from the natural color of the eggshell. As I etched each layer with acid, the green color grew lighter and lighter until I was able to reveal the innermost white layer of the eggshell, mere micrometers from etching right through to the inside of the shell. It was a little nerve-wracking towards the end!

I so enjoyed making this. It has been so long since I've worked with emu eggs and I'm happy that I tried again. I have five more to play with, so look for more emu eggs over the next few weeks!

Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Latent Beginnings

Today's Friday Egg is an extra special offering for you. This piece is called "Latent Beginnings" has been chosen to be in the People's Gallery Exhibition at the Austin City Hall. I deliver it later on this afternoon and the opening reception (to which you are all invited!) is on Friday, February 27th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at City Hall, 301 W. 2nd Street, Austin, TX 78701.

Here's the description of the piece that I wrote to describe the piece when I entered: "Latent Beginnings" represents the clockwork intensity of the seed underground, packed with all the blueprints and tools it need to eventually build a towering tree that reaches the sky."

I hope you are able to come out for the reception in February so you can see this work in person, as well as many other works of art by other talented Austin-area artists.

Happy Friday!
