Friday Egg: Snail Shells

Non-Traditional Pysanky Snail Shell Design in Blues, Grays, Whites and Yellow

Another egg springs from this basic design:

Non-Traditional Pysanky Etched Emu Egg Wagon Wheel Design

But with this design I used curved lines to indicate a dimensionality that doesn't show in the wagon wheels design. It ended up looking like tires or snail shells. The color of the baselines is Golden Wheat and the fill-in colors are shades of Emu Blue and Deep Blue Sea. I definitely feel that there is more to explore with this version of the design, so get ready to see it more often in the future.

Don't forget to come see me at the Ridgetop Winter Bazaar tomorrow (Saturday) December 14th, Ridgetop Elementary School at 5005 Caswell Ave. Austin, TX 78751. It's the last opportunity to see my work in person this year (unless you call for a private showing), so please drop by! I will be showing my ornament eggs only, which are less detailed and simpler designs.

Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Delft Garden

Delft Blue Floral Contemporary Batik Eggshell

Revisiting a design this week, somewhat opposite color scheme from a few weeks ago. I think that this one is not as strong, but I don't know that it is a bad thing. Just different. I do wish that I had etched this one to give some more emphasis to the design. The mottled effect of the dye is bothering me as I think it makes the design seem out of focus or blurry.  But then maybe I should just stop comparing the two and give them each a chance to shine.

Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Tie Dye Experiment

Tie-dyed batik eggshell

Today's Friday Egg is a batiked goose eggshell reminiscent of tie-dye. I simply dotted different colors of dye on the white eggshell with a q-tip, waxed the egg and then dyed it black. One layer only, but with the different colors of dye peeking through the black, it looks a little more fun than just a plain black and white design. Of course, now that I said that I think I might just try a black and white one because that would be very pretty in a different way!

Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Moonlight Garden

Etched Goose Egg Pysanka in Cobalt and White, Moonlight Garden

Happy Friday! A lovely blue and white etched egg today for Friday. I really like the way this one turned out, with a really deep etch and lovely cobalt blue background.

I just finished up a workshop with Ginger and Sarah, working on teaching beginning Pysanka with Sarah and on etching with Ginger. We had a great day: come join us next time!

REMINDER: Last Chance to Register for my Ornament Workshops this weekend

REMINDER! LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER FOR THE FALL WORKSHOPS!

This fall workshop will concentrate on teaching you how to create your own beautiful heirloom-quality Pysanky eggshell ornaments using traditional methods of waxing and dyeing. I will have the usual red and green or blue and white on hand, but feel free to create the ornament that suits your personal holiday preference with my large selection of aniline dyes. You will leave the workshop with at least one completed eggshell ornament with ornament hanger finding, but most likely you will have time to complete two eggs. I will supply all beeswax, dyes, tools and blown eggs to work on in class. Blown chicken eggs will be available for $2 each if you want to purchase additional eggs for future use.

We will meet at my central East Austin home studio with easy access from I-35 and 183.

If a class doesn't "make", I will give you the option of taking the other scheduled workshop or I will refund your money.
We will be working with carbon-darkened beeswax and aniline dyes, both of which stain, so please wear art clothes or bring a smock/apron.

Ornament Workshop #1
Friday, October 25th
9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
$70

Ornament Workshop #2
Saturday, October 26th

Friday Egg: Periwinkle Butterfly

Pysanky in Green and Purple, Periwinkle Butterfly

Happy Friday! Today is a cute little chicken egg in one of my favorite color combinations. I love purple and green together. Combined with one of my favorite design motifs and it was a fun egg to make!

I started with a white chicken egg for the base lines, then dipped quickly in Key Lime for the lighter green and then a longer dip in Key Lime for the deeper green. The last color was UGS Purple, but a quick dip so it looks more periwinkle here.

I hope you enjoy it.
