Friday Egg: Moonlight Garden

Etched Goose Egg Pysanka in Cobalt and White, Moonlight Garden

Happy Friday! A lovely blue and white etched egg today for Friday. I really like the way this one turned out, with a really deep etch and lovely cobalt blue background.

I just finished up a workshop with Ginger and Sarah, working on teaching beginning Pysanka with Sarah and on etching with Ginger. We had a great day: come join us next time!

  1. Could you please share how you got this great intaglio-like effect with the darker blue around the inside edges of the etch. Also, what dye color is the cobalt blue?
(my guesses are 1) dye dk blue and etch through it, leaving some, then dye the cobalt, or 2) etch first, dye the dk blue, wash most of it back, then dye the cobalt. But I could be completely wrong & maybe it is some other combination altogether!)
    thanks.
love the flower forms, they remind me of diatoms

  2. Thanks, Hannarit! The egg was simply wax on white eggshell and then etched deeply with vinegar until I could feel that there was a ridge or bump where the etched egg met the waxed or unetched edge. Once that was done, I simpy dyed the egg. The deeply etched edges means that when I take the egg out of the dye and wipe it off, more of the dye particles stick in the edges so it appears to be a darker blue. Does that make sense?
