E.A.S.T. Weekend Two! Last Show of the Year
The second weekend of the East Austin Studio Tour starts this Saturday! Click on the link to get to the online catalog:http://east.bigmedium.org/catalog.html
I am showing some larger pieces involving multiples as well as a few explorations of the eggshell on its own, and as always some lovely singular works. This is the last show I will be doing for the year.
I'm trying something new this year that I hope will be a success. I will be conducting a drawing for "Call Response" (details of work here: http://katydavidart.blogspot.com/…/friday-egg-call-response… .) Entry for the drawing is $10 and at 6 p.m. Sunday, November 23rd I will draw the winning ticket. Winner will be notified by telephone or email on Sunday evening. If you can't make it by the studio tour you can still enter the drawing: just give me a call at (512) 965-7061 and we can do it over the phone or send it through Paypal to katydavidart (at) gmail(dot) com and I will fill out the ticket for you.
Stop by to say hello, see my new work, have a glass of wine and try your luck!

Day 2 of The East Austin Studio Tour
Day Two has begun! Yesterday was a lot of fun and I got great responses to my new direction and am excited to work on more ideas this winter. I have one of my goose eggs up for raffle, so this is a great chance for you to own one of my works for the price of a $10 raffle ticket! Even if you can come in person, you are still eligible to win it. Just contact me at katydavidart at gmail dot com and we can work out a way for you to enter. Here's the one I chose to raffle off:
For more information on the piece, go to this previous blog post.
Good luck!

Friday Egg: Woven Tulips
This goose egg pysanky is based on the same geometry as one that I posted a few months ago called Echinacea. I love seeing how the same pattern done with different motifs and colors can change so dramatically. Can you tell when they are side by side? Alternating levels and stacking motifs!
Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Torsion #1 Blues
A couple of weeks ago I posted this design done in reds and purples and said I would soon post another one or two that showed how different it looks with different colors so here you go!
Here they are side by side. What do you think of the difference?
The eggshell featured today was done in PUSA Patina, UGS Turquoise and UGS Bright Blue on white base eggshell color.
Happy Friday!

Curated Tours of the East Austin Studio Tour
The East Austin Studio Tour is coming up fast (November 15th and 16th, 22nd and 23rd) and there's a new way to do it this year! I know it can be daunting to try to figure out where to go and who to see out of over 400 artists and studios. I have a great solution! Art Alliance Austin and CAMIBA art curator Troy Campa are offering a series of curated tours where they picks out 5 artists who stand out from the crowd. It looks like they are three to four hours long and on some of them they even have a tour van so you don't have to drive yourself around.
I think it's a great way to dive in to EAST if you haven't before and even if you have, they will take you to see amazing artists you would miss otherwise. If you are interested, take a look at the CAMIBA art website or the Art Alliance website.
For general information about the Studio Tour, visit this link.
I hope you have a chance to go on the tour this year, no matter how you do it, and that you stop by my studio to say hello and take a look at some of my new works. Here's peek:

Friday Egg: Blue Bird Swirl
Blue Bird Swirl is similar to one I posted a few weeks back, Flora and Fauna. But this time I fleshed out the details and added a lot of color. I started a white egg and then went through all the colors I could fit on the egg. I know there's Pysanky Showcase Lily Rose, UGS Turquoise, PUSA Lime Green, UGS Bright Green, PUSA Violet, UGS Pink, PUSA Pumpkin and the final background color is UGS Brown. Interesting how the basic design can look so different depending on color choices, line width, and details. I like to do a design in multiple ways to see what can happen. I put them side by side so you can see the difference.
What do you think of the difference between the two designs?
Happy Friday!

Friday Egg: Serpentine
I named this piece "Serpentine" because of the way the lines twist and turn. I like the result of the interaction and interplay of both line and color. I started with a goose egg dyed purple. After waxing the purple lines, I washed back and used Pysanky USA Golden Wheat, Pysanky USA Temple Orange and UGS Dark Red for the mirroring lines. The final color is UGS Purple. I played with this idea for several more pieces, so you will see the effect of using different colors and how that changes the mood of the piece.
I got the idea of playing with line width from the teacher of a design class I've been taking named Victoria Suescum. You can check out some of her work on her website. Her art is so different in almost every way than mine, but taking classes from different artists is so beneficial and important. Putting myself in a bit of discomfort as I try new ways of doing things helps me grow as an artist.
If you live in Austin and are interested in seeing this piece in person and buying it for your very own, I have entered it into the East Austin Studio Tour group show "Due East." Come check it out on November 6th. You can find details here!
The East Austin Studio Tour is coming up fast (November 15th and 16th through November 22nd and 23rd) and I am busily working to make it the most exciting show I've done yet! I'm working on some new ideas, but I won't know what's ready for primetime until we get closer to showtime.
I will get back to making gifs of the eggshells as soon as I find the missing piece that screws into the camera body so that I can connect it to the tripod. Without a tripod, I can't take all the photos from the exact point to reconstruct them as a moving scene later. I wonder what the piece is called, whether they are universal to all tripods and cameras, and whether you can buy one. Anyone know?
Happy Friday!
